Animal Bites Are a Common Pet Emergency
Even the most mild-mannered pet can find themselves in peril when they come across another pet who is more aggressive. Even docile pets can decide to start a fight with the right (or wrong) animal when they finally meet. Dogs are not the only culprits. Cats find themselves in plenty of violent situations with other cats and dogs. We treat pets who have been in fights, have random animal bites from animals such as raccoon, and many other animal bite scenarios. We know these things happen, even to protected animals. If your pet has been attacked by another animal it is important to get them treatment as soon as possible.
What to Do During an Animal Attack
First, stay calm and think through any action taken. Diving in between two dogs, cats, or other animals fighting is a fast way to get yourself bitten as well. Second, find a way to distract your pet without getting hurt. A loud noise or a bucket of water is often effective. Once the animals are safely separated stop any bleeding with a clean cloth and pressure, then call us to bring your pet in. We will treat their injuries starting with the urgent trauma, and will likely prescribe antibiotics because animal bites can be full of harmful bacteria. Rabies may be a question that needs to be addressed.
The best way to deal with an animal bite is to prevent it. Always use a leash when out of your home. Never trust an unknown dog or cat even if they seem friendly, and keep your eyes out for wild animals.
